CHEERS

This is a typical bar scene in Nottingham where we live! The woman means business!

What would you order at this bar?

Nottingham was named after the Anglo-Saxon Snot family - 'ham' means home. Its first name was Tigguocobauc, which means the 'house of caves'. There are lots of caves in Nottingham, enough to fit 20,000 people, which was useful in the Blitz during the Second World War.

The three most famous people connected with Nottingham are Robin Hood, Brian Clough, the football manager of Nottingham Forest that won two European Cups, and Paul Smith, a tailor who made many of Tony Blair’s suits.

There have been more films made of Robin Hood than any other real person, including Jesus Christ. Tourists having seen Robin Hood films (particularly the Kevin Costner one) get very disappointed because Nottingham castle is not a castle; it's a mansion.

Nottingham Castle got destroyed centuries ago. The mansion that was built on the site of the castle was also destroyed, not by an army but by the people of Nottingham after the Lord, then living in the mansion, voted against working men getting the vote in Parliament. As punishment to the city, he vowed not to rebuild it. So the council just took it over and did it up, thus becoming the first council-run museum outside London in England. Power to the People!

Nottingham is also where the English Civil War started - the city was on Cromwell's side against the King; hence its main street is called Parliament Street.

Nottingham was also the home of the lace industry, which is why it is often said that Nottingham women are beautiful. The women who worked in the lace factories would take leftover lace back home to beautify themselves.

What stories are there about where you live?
Do you like living where you live?
If not, where would you like to live?

The guy does look nonplussed, but maybe he's playing it cool by enjoying a smoke and a drink before what will follow! xx
