VIVIENNE WESTWOOD VS. MICHELLE OBAMA

Born in 1941, Vivienne Westwood – or, more formally, Dame Vivienne Westwood – is a British fashion designer. In 1992, she went knicker-less to Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE from the Queen!

She came to prominence in the 1970s by making clothes for Malcolm McLaren’s boutique on King’s Road in Chelsea. At the time, McLaren was the manager of the Sex Pistols in the punk heyday of the late 1970s. Her designs have been worn by Camilla, the wife of Prince Charles, at a Royal Ascot -race meeting and by Sarah Jessica Parker in the 2008 Sex and the City film.

Recently, Vivienne Westwood described Michelle Obama’s dress sense as “dreadful”. She added that the America’s First Lady is “a very nice-looking lady, but it’s a non-starter regarding clothes that suit her”.

Is Vivienne Westwood right about Michelle Obama’s dress sense?
Are you or were you ever a punk?
If so, what did you wear as a punk?

I don't really know anything about fashion.

But I do know that Michelle is watched closely, copied and admired by many for her "fashion sense".

I do like that she usually wears "off the rack" sensible fashions that aren't out of the price range of most Americans. ... But her 'bangs' have got to go.

I didn't really get into punk. "Anarchy In The UK" is the ONLY song I know by the Sex Pistols.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

What a 72 year old British woman thinks of a 40-something American First Lady's dress sense is hardly relevant. Ms Obama looks lovely in whatever she wears.

I doubt that there are any fashion watchers in the states who would applaud the dress code of a 70-something British chick.

You’re comparing apples to oranges dear.

I wonder why Americans are so touchy about the First Lady's fashion sense...

But knickerless doesn't count if you're wearing tights

I was never "punk"! I don't like punk music either!

I think Michelle Obama dresses well on most occasions, particular when she is in a red dress.

Vivienne Westwood has been a fashion designer for a long time, so something is going right for her!

Tights do spoil the knicker-less effect. I'm not sure whether she knew this photo was going to be taken.

Though punk music may not have been always musically accomplished, it did mark a democratic moment in the history of music. It allowed many people, deprived of music lessons at school, the chance to play music for better or worse!
