WHAT WILL THE MIDDLE CLASS DO?

WHAT WILL THE MIDDLE CLASS DO?

The squeezed middle class face severe shortages of their staple diet!

There is a massive shortage of olives after bad weather affected their harvest in Greece. As a result of this shortage, the price of the premium Halkidiki olives has increased by over 50 per cent within a year. There is also a massive shortage of extra virgin olive oil because of a drought in Spain, which produces 50 per cent of the world’s olives.

Not only is there a shortage of olives, but there’s a shortage of almonds because of prolonged drought and declining bee population in California, which produces 80 per cent of the world’s crop. As a result, the price of Green & Black's organic almond chocolate bars has increased by nearly 35 per cent; many shops cannot stock these chocolate bars because of high demand and low supply.

The supply of goat’s cheese has also crashed because of a major cull of goats across Europe after an outbreak of Q fever.

This is all nothing compared to the severe shortages of taramasalata and hummus a year ago; that was a double-dip recession!

Do you like olives? If so, what sort of olives do you like?
How do you define your class or are you classless?

I’m not a big fan of olives, though I enjoy eating chilli pepper-stuffed green olives. The olives in France are much better than those sold in the UK. I would describe myself as middle class and, if pushed further, upper middle class. In researching this post, I have found out there is an International Olive Council (IOC), which used to be known as the International Olive Oil Council. Popeye would have been proud!

My favorite olive would be the Spanish queen olive with pit. I would say middle class.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Sliced cucumber arranged around a shallow bowl so it totally lines the edge. Fill the bowl 50% hummus, 50% tsatsiki. Sprinkle a mixture of roasted paprika and chilli powder lightly over the hummus. Top with as many olives as you fancy ..... ideally stoned or stuffed.

Eat with freshly warmed pitta bread cut into strips.

I would accompany with a glass of red wine - merlot or sangiovese would be nice. If you want the full Greek, see if you can find some Nemean wine.

warm xx

If you ate your spinach, you wouldn't be afraid of Popeye!

Your double-dip recession pun was hilarious...

I absolutely hate olives and refuse to eat them, I also don't like almonds but I love Brazil nuts.

I would describe myself as very upper lower class, I came from impoverished stock but have champagne tastes and a good standard of education (acquired long after leaving school and the "family" fold) and I sound very well-bred when I speak but often discuss vulgar topics... Haha
Brazil nuts are great. I actually wrote a blog post on Brazil nuts in the distant past - NUTS.

Thanks for your comment.
In Mexico, I once went to a restaurant in Monterrey, and the only choice on the menu was goat dishes or ... goat dishes!

Damn that bites I cook with olive oil.
I try and cook with olive oil, though I was told I should not use olive oil when frying. I'm not sure whether that's true or not.

Australia makes an excellent brand of Olive Oil called Viva which I use for cooking... Yes, it is Extra Virgin. I also use Olive Oil sprays and in Australia, we have the wonderful Cobram Estate brand. It's well worth a try and comes in three flavour intensities
Extra virgin olive oil seems such a strange term. I'm not sure if I know what the extra means. I think virgin olive oil means that it is free of chemicals, but I could be wrong!

I don't think class and accents are linked. My regional accent has been lost as I've lived around the country, though it comes back if I'm a bit drunk!

It took me a while to even slightly enjoy a stuffed olive. Many people rave about them; I keep trying them to see if I'm missing something.
