AMERICA VERSUS EUROPE

The Ryder Cup has just started this morning. As I post, Europe is ahead in three of the four games at the moment.

The Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf contest between America and Europe. The venue alternates between America and Europe. For me, it’s one of the best sporting events to watch, even better than the Stanley Cup or the World Cup!

The cup is named after the British businessmen Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy for the first such contest in 1927.

Initially, the Ryder Cup was contested between America and Britain (and later Britain and Ireland). But the Americans were so dominant that the rest of Europe was invited to help out the British and Irish golfers from 1979 onwards.

Up to 1979, America had won the Ryder Cup 18 out of the 22 contests. But since 1979, Europe has been victorious nine times compared to America’s seven victories.

Players are not paid to play in the Ryder Cup, but they are very rich and playing in the Ryder Cup boosts their sponsorship earnings. It’s all about pride (and a bit of money!). The large numbers of partisan spectators are very noisy unlike the quiet and well behaved spectators at other golf tournaments.

The European team is the clear favourite to win the Ryder Cup again. Europe has more of the world’s top-ranked golfers, including the world’s number one golfer Rory McIlroy above; they have won five out of the last six Ryder Cup contests; and the competition is being played at Gleneagles in Scotland.

But the Americans, captained by the legendary Tom Watson, seem very pumped-up about winning this time - see the patriotic Ricky Fowler above. Tiger Woods is not playing because of (alleged) injury, but his absence will probably help the Americans as he has a disappointing Ryder Cup record.

For the Americans, the Ryder Cup is all about redemption; for the Europeans, it’s all about proving that Europe can do something right!

Also, the British golfer Ian Poulter needs the trophy so he can continue to have breakfast - see below for his breakfast of Cheerios served with milk in the trophy!

Will you be following the Ryder Cup this weekend?
Have you ever had sex on a golf course or at another sporting venue?
What, if any, breakfast cereal do you eat?

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Home made muesli.

I'm concerned that the competition seems to have degenerated into a rabble, not helped by the conduct of some of the players. I'm not snobbish about it at all, I just find all the hootin an a-hollerin a bit of a turn off.

But apart from that, I LOVE it!

Watching golf on TV is about as exciting as watching milk curdle....which then leaves me nothing to pour over my Rice Krispies.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

I am a fan of both Ricky Fowler and Rory McIlroy. It will be a good match to watch this weekend. I enjoy Tom Watson also.

I have been banned from a few courses for oral play on the green. I can't help it. I get all twitchy when holding the club. I am a horrible golfer so my male companion usually has to provide instructions by spooning me and adjusting my grip...We both end up with wood. LOL

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

No wonder Canyaz declined going golfing with us when hubby and I were visiting! Hmmmmmmm

I'll definitely be tuning in, I wish there were more "team" golf events, I like that format!

Amazingly I've never fooled around on any of the golf courses I've been on. Football field, yes.

Fruity Pebbles rock!

I had to follow the Ryder Cup on the radio as I don't subscribe to Sky Sports. The spectators sounded like football fans at times.
Justin Rose and Graeme McDowell were amazing on the last day.

I don't normally like watching golf too much; but the Ryder Cup, being a team contest, makes it good to watch for me.

Golf holds no interest for me whatsoever.

    No

I like Carman's toasted muesli, I often eat Sanitarium Weet-Bix but my cereal of choice is Kellogg's Nutri-Grain, I also like froot loops, coco pops and rice bubbles...
Golf normally holds no interest for me. But the Ryder Cup does, not least because it's one of the few times when Europe comes together.

Rory McIlroy played Ricky Fowler on the last day, but Rory McIlroy won very comfortably. They are friends as well.

The Ryder Cup is a great team event. It must be slightly odd for golfers to play as a team as most golfing tournaments are individual and not team contests.
Thanks for stopping by.

    Whole wheat bran!
Just as the Americans asked Britain to add Ireland and the rest of Europe to make the Ryder Cup a contest, perhaps the US team should become a continental American team and add Canadian, Argentinian etc golfers.

The Ryder Cup is great. But you didn't miss much; it was an easy win for Europe again. I just don't understand why the Americans don't do better at team golf contests.
