FROM YOGIC FLYING TO ORANGE SEX

Last night I watched a documentary on an Indian ashram, a spiritual retreat. The ashram attracted many Western tourists wanting to get away from it all - some for weeks and some for years.

Ashrams can be traced back to ancient Indian times and have played a key role in Hindu culture. They are places where people can get closer to themselves, other people and nature. Yoga and meditation are regularly practiced in ashrams.

In 1968, The Beatles travelled to India to attend an ashram under the spiritual leadership of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who pioneered transcendental meditation and yogic flying. Also at the ashram were Donovan and The Beach Boys’ Mike Love.

I have never practiced yoga and I have never engaged in sustained meditation. I have my quiet moments where I meditate, but these moments of meditation don’t last long because I get bored and I don’t often like what I’m thinking.

I am no spiritualist; I am a materialist!

Have you ever practiced yoga? If so, have you ever tried to do a bit of yogic flying?
Do you ever consciously meditate?
Would you describe yourself as spiritual?

When I lived in London, I had a friend who was a member of the Rajneesh movement led by the Indian mystic, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (later known as Osho). Members of this movement were often called Orange People because of the colours of the clothes they wore.

My friend did a lot of yoga and meditation, but she also did a lot of sex with fellow Orange People. Her spiritual leader became very rich and amassed 93 Rolls Royce cars!

Have you ever practiced yoga? If so, have you ever tried to do a bit of yogic flying? Never have

Do you ever consciously meditate? No

Would you describe yourself as spiritual? Not in the sense of yoga stuff

I am always so amused when people get involved in something and the leaders of the "movement" are living a lavish life. HELLO!!! Does it not smack of a fraud?

I think joining a yoga class would be a great way to meet women, as would joing a cooking class.
One of my male friends said that dog-walking was a great way to meet and talk to women who are walking their dogs.

Have I ever practiced yoga..? Not actually practiced yoga but been to two classes/sessions. Couldn't get into it.

Do I ever consciously meditate..? I used to but have lost the concentration to focus on it in recent years.

Would I describe myself as spiritual..? I suppose I am in having a sense of the supernatural, now I know that spiritualism usually doesn't include any sense of connectedness to the spirit realm, other than the "Holy spirit" but there are myriad forms of spiritualism... I don't connect with the natural world as well as I would wish, I don't connect with christianity or taoism, buddhism et al and I'm not convinced of any supreme being but if I ever get a sign, that could change.

Further to the question on yogic flying... I have never deliberately engaged in trancendental meditation that might induce this but many times in my life I have flown while in a sitting position (with knees crossed in front of me) where I could travel forward at great speed by leaning forward, slow down by sitting up straight and stop be leaning back... I would guess that my bum elevation above the ground was about two or three feet. These experiences were had during sleep where I was laying in a horizontal position. Just trippy!
Your yogic flying experiemce does sound trippy.

I'm not tall but I'm still not tempted to take up yoga.

I agree; many spiritual and religious movements are often no more than profiteering cults.

It's interesting that you've done yoga and meditation but are not spiritual; that makes yoga and meditation far more appealing to me!

Yoga doesn't really appeal to me. I think I would just find muscles I didn't know I had!
