THE NOT-SO-HUMBLE EXCLAMATION MARK

Until I started blogging, I avoided using exclamation marks when I wrote. But since blogging, I’ve started to use exclamation marks more! You see!

Before blogging, I was of the view that using exclamation marks was often a sign of bad writing. As F Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “Cut out all these exclamation points. An exclamation point is like laughing at your own jokes.”

On bad writing, the editor of roadjunky.com wrote: “Exclamation marks exist to give emphasis to what you're writing. But in order to emphasise something there needs to be a good deal of unemphasised content or else it's all ketchup and no fries.”

The exclamation mark is often used to add emphasis, though its meaning varies slightly between languages. As well as to make a point, I use exclamation marks to denote when I’m not being literal! An exclamation mark for me replaces a facial expression in writing.

Westward Ho! is the only place in the UK that has an exclamation mark in its name, but there’s a place in Quebec that has two exclamation marks in its name - see below.

Do you use exclamation marks when you write?
What’s your favourite punctuation mark?
How important is punctuation for you when you write?

I’m a bit of a pedant for punctuation. I hate reading people who write the 1960’s when they mean the 1960s (or 1960s’) or it’s when they mean its (or its’).

1960’s refers to the year 1960 and the 1960s refers to the decade. It’s is the contracted form of it is and its is the possessive form of it.

Though I like commas, I love full stops. You know where you finally stand with a full stop!

1. Yes, I was once criticised by a here for using them too often! Gratuitous exclamations are good as far as I'm concerned!!
2. Probably the apostrophe, and probably because as one of the few people who know how to use it correctly I can be a smug bastard! See!!
3. Very important for me, but I don't get all pompous about it, really!

I am awful when it comes to punctuation. I am awful when it comes to spelling. hen I was younger it was that we lived in an American house located in Spain. I am not good with languages to begin with. But throw in living bi-lingual...UHG!
What spell check doesn't catch usually gets past my poor grammar.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I forgot period is the American term for a full stop. If you said period here, they'd think you'd meant menstruation!
Language is amazing.

My favourite punctuation mark IS the exclamation mark.

I find punctuation very important and do not enjoy reading writing from those who either don't use it at all or regularly use it incorrectly.

ps: Dear S, an exclamation mark is not designed to denote tongue-in-cheek humour but a very short, excited statement. Somehow, I recall us having discussed this in the past and not agreeing.
I think my use of exclamation marks conforms with its rich usage in terms of emphasis. I'm just signalling tongue-in-cheek by emphasis. Notice, no exclamation mark at the end! But there was one there.

pps: Your lesson on punctuation regarding the apostrophe to denote ownership, 1960's as opposed to period 1960s etc will go over many reader's heads, I fear.
The apostrophe causes all sorts of problems. There's even an Apostrophe Protection Society in the UK to defend its usage, though I think they're fighting a losing battle.
I'm more relaxed about apostrophe errors than spelling mistakes.

It's very rare to read a blog without exclamation marks!

I've found that paragraphs change in blogs - a paragraph in a book doesn't work that well in blog posts. People need a break more often when reading online.

It seems you have a dirty mind when it comes to punctuation. I've made an appointment for you to see a therapist!

Language, grammar, punctuation etc is all about how you use it and how others understand it. That's one of the advantages of a less rule-bound language like English.

I think the moan about the exclamation mark is about its' over-use!
'That' and 'which' is a tricky one and, for me, it can only be resolved by a comma.

Piss-poor spelling irritates the poop out of me, too, dear man... Even moreso when the person making the spelling mistakes has English as their first language. I've always been somewhat strict about the correct use of punctuation but occasionally get a bit lax, myself... Especially when I'm stressed and distressed.
I've just checked whether my spelling was correct in my reply. I think it was. No exclamation mark there!
The English language is a great language in the way it evolves.
