MOTHER’S RUIN
MOTHER’S RUIN Gin and tonic (or G and T) was introduced to Britain by the British East India Company. Gin, flavoured by juniper berries, and tonic water, containing quinine, was seen as a medicine to counter malaria. Gin was prescribed as medicine in mid-eighteenth-century England. Gin was cheap and was drunk by poor people, especially women. Gin, in the words of London historian Ellen Castelow, “was the opium of the people”. Above is William Hogarth’s 1751 Gin Lane painting. At this time, gin then became known as mother’s ruin. From the 1730s onwards, legislation was passed to make gin-drinking less affordable and beer-drinking more affordable. A man’s drink was taxed less and a woman’s drink was taxed more! Here are three bits of trivia about gin: 1. People drinking gin (or alcohol generally) never perform better conversationally at parties until they have two gins, but they’re never better at talking after drinking gin than not drinking gin 2. 19 October is the International Gin and Tonic Day 3. If you buy cheap gin but serve it in a heavy glass, people drinking it will think it’s an expensive gin Do you enjoy drinking a gin and tonic? I do! |

I did not know about #3! I guess I can buy the cheap stuff...I got heavy glasses! I'm not much of a drinker, but a nice refreshing cool drink in the summer is Gin and "Lime Crush" pop(soda) with glass full of ice! It will take forever to down this bottle unless you help! Merry Christmas, spunky! [image]

Tonight has been a Gordons and Schweppes night. Last night was a Tullamore Dew night and I can predict with some confidence that tomorrow night will begin with Efes and finish with Kulüp Rakısı.

I have never had a gin and tonic. On the plane, the man next to me asked for gin, that reminded me of a drink I had back in college. When I arrived, I asked my daughter to buy some and I told her I have had a sloe gin fizz a long time ago. Anyway we ordered some sloe gin and had it delivered, got to love asda, and mixed it with Belvoir Raspberry & Lemon Cordial and soda water. The bottle of sloe gin was gone in a couple of days.

I'm much more inclined towards vodka, straight-up but I will happily do shots with you some time, S.

I'm not much of a fan of any spirit but if I were to drink Gin, I'd probably drink Plymouth Gin - It's differently flavoured to the London Gins but it's been so long I can't remember quite how! Gin and Tonic arrived in England at very different times. The eighteenth century problems with Gin pre-date Tonic Water by at least a hundred years. Hogarth's gin drinkers are likely to have drunk their gin neat and quite probably by the pint.
