PAGE THREE

Page Three is a regular feature in Britain’s most popular newspaper, The Sun, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Page Three involves publishing a photograph of a topless glamour model.

The Sun did briefly have a Page Seven feature involving bare-chested men, but this was soon dropped as it was not popular with its largely male readership.

Soon after Rupert Murdoch took over The Sun, the first photograph of a topless woman appeared on the third page of the newspaper on 17 November 1970. It has since been a regular feature until, it seems, very recently.

Below are three prominent Page Three models - Samantha Fox, Melinda Messenger and Linda Lusardi.

Though Page Three is very popular with the newspaper’s male readers, it has attracted a lot of criticism from feminists for objectifying women, from parents for allowing to easily see topless women and from others for being irrelevant to reporting news.

In 2012, the launch of the No More Page Three campaign attracted over 200,000 signatures to its petition. Above is the Green Party MP Caroline Lucas speaking out against Page Three in the UK’s House of Commons.

A few weeks ago, The Times, also owned by Rupert Murdoch, reported that The Sun was about to ditch its Page Three feature. However, very soon after this article, The Sun published its usual Page Three featuring a topless woman. But since then the newspaper has not published any Page Three features.

Perhaps the newspaper does not want to be seen caving in to pressure and is gradually ditching Page Three. With Rupert Murdoch involved, the only thing that will stop Page Three are commercial pressures.

Do you think Page Three should be banned?
Are there any newspapers where you live that publish pictures of semi-naked women?
If you were an editor of a newspaper and if your advertisers and readers wanted pictures of naked women, would you publish photographs of naked women in your newspaper?

Below is the script from the 1980s' Yes, Prime Minister comedy series:
Jim Hacker (Prime Minister): Don't tell me about the press. I know exactly who reads the papers: the Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country; the Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; the Financial Times is read by people who own the country; the Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country; and The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.
Sir Humphrey Appleby (Cabinet Secretary): Oh and Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?
Bernard Woolley (Prime Minister’s Private Secretary): Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits.

It was funny at the time!

1. Probably not. Arguments in favour of banning tend to be made on the basis of how comfortable you are with objectification. However, I reckon covering nudity is conditioned, learned behaviour (practical considerations aside), and perhaps we should move beyond these man made taboos?
2. Yes.
3. Probably, for commercial reasons alone.........

I used to have a proper crush on Sam Fox all those years ago when she first appeared. For about a week anyway. Then I found a copy of a jizz mag!!

No I don't think it should be banned....I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

Local newspapers publishing photos of topless women??? Hell no....this is Ireland. We may have a government but the country is still pretty much run by the Papacy!!!!

If not printing them was causing a decline in revenue I'd definitely put page 3 back!!!

No...but I wouldn't object if the Sun were banned.

Are there any newspapers where you live that publish pictures of semi-naked women?
Sadly, no.

If you were an editor of a newspaper and if your advertisers and readers wanted pictures of naked women, would you publish photographs of naked women in your newspaper?
Me, editor of a paper? I can barely pump out a blog every so often, and I'm going to edit a paper!
Depending on our target audience that could go either way. [blog mystelle] has my head on this issue- I'm sick of EVERYTHING being commercialized. But my heart is still male...and sexist. I agree with everything she says and I still wanna see her naked.

Do you think Page Three should be banned? If the readership that is paying for the newspaper wants them let it be printed. As for children seeing the page3, how about parents do a little parenting

Some people seem to miss the point about the objections to Page 3. It's not about nudity. It's not saying that tits are evil, or that the sight of bare breasts might corrupt a minor. It's about the way that women are portrayed in the media.

It is the objectification of women that corrupts children, not the sight of naked bodies.

Banning might be a short-term solution, but the long-term aim has to be a change to the way we think.

It's similar to the racist Chelsea supporters - stopping people behaving in that manner is one thing, but the real goal is changing society so that people don't even think that way.

Nice to see some hairy minge though

I totally agree with you about nudity. In France, I went to a nudist beach and at first I was a little wary, particularly as there were families on the beach, but after a while there was no problem!
Nudity is most natural and should never be covered up!

The Sun is quite an unusual newspaper in combining photos of topless women with news ... sorry, The Sun doesn't do news beyond its front cover!

One newspaper here, the Daily Star, is more of a porn newspaper, perhaps not surprising given that it's owned by a porn baron. Being registered as a newspaper gives pornographers certain privileges!

Spunky: "For some reason - immigration and religion? - America is quite a conservative country. And I'm not saying publishing newspapers with tits is not conservative!"

I think America is both more and less conservative than it appears. Robert Heinlein predicted in the late sixties or early seventies that there would be a right wing religious reaction in this country like you wouldn't believe, and he was right. The right wing bible thumping wackos are even dumber and scarier than we believe- and they are some mean sons-of-bitches too. Just as mean as ISIL and maybe- maybe- a little smarter.

There is also a healthy core of committed progressives surrounded by hordes of folks who would vote liberal if they ween't too apathetic and tired and overworked to get off their asses and vote- they've given up hope of change, for good reason. Democracy sucks. It's inefficient and it delivers slowly when it delivers at all.

And then there's the other thirty per cent who just want to know who got voted off the goddam island.

I've always been fascinated in America but sometimes I just can't understand some of the things that go on. I guess Britain may be like that for foreigners.

SECONDED! I think banning the nudity is churlish but it should never have existed. It's sleazy and objectifying. When was male nudity ever used in such a way asks the dirty bitch who used to buy every month's issue of Australian Women's Forum (lots of cocks but never fully erect ones).

Read a newspaper for the flippin' news, not the nipples!
