SUITS YOU

In 1931, after being declared bankrupt, Hugo Boss joined the Nazi Party led by Adolf Hitler and became a sponsoring member of the Schutzstaffel (SS) led by Heinrich Himmler.

Hugo Boss was the official supplier of uniforms to the Schutzstaffel, as well as to the Sturmabteilung and Hitler Youth. The company used prisoners of war to make uniforms for the Nazis. Hugo Boss’s business fortunes flourished during Nazi times.

After the Second World War ended, and because of his Nazi sympathies, Hugo Boss was forbidden to run a business. However, his -in-law took over the running of the company. Hugo Boss is now a leading fashion house making lots of money!

For the reason of Hugo Boss’s Nazi past, I will never wear a Hugo Boss suit. I wear a Paul Smith suit, because Paul Smith’s only crime is that he designed suits for Tony Blair. What is it with suit designers and war criminals?!

Below are Brad Goreski, an American fashion stylist, and Nicole Scherzinger, former Pussycat Doll and X Factor judge, wearing red suits made by Hugo Boss. They should start going out with each other!

How many suits do you own?
Have you and your partner ever worn matching outfits?
Are there any companies that you boycott?

I have about five suits in my wardrobe but I only wear my Paul Smith suit. I’ve never worn an outfit to match an outfit worn by a partner. That would be a bit too twee for me.

As well as Hugo Boss, I try and boycott McDonald’s because they can’t make burgers, Sports Direct because they don’t treat their workers right, and Starbucks because they can’t make coffee ... or is it the other way round?! I’m sure all these companies, now aware of my boycott, will soon issue profit warnings!

How many suits do you own?
I dunno, but I didn't buy any of them new. I don't have a lot of occasion to wear suits.

Have you and your partner ever worn matching outfits?
No. But we dressed for Halloween one year, her as a Catholic schoolgirl and me as a priest. Not matching but complimentary, as it were.

Are there any companies that you boycott?
Walmart! If they've got it I can get it elsewhere or I can do without it.

I've suits, but haven't worn them in years. I wear a blazer if I need dressing up. I spend most of the time in as comfortable attire as possible. Hopefully jammies.

As for Hugo, the sins of the father should not pass to the son.

Blog on!

I own one dull suit. I do, instead, own several smart corporate pieces which I can carry off as both professional and feminine. I do not boycott brands. If I did, it would be impractical to live.

How many suits do you own? 8 or 9 sitting in my closet. I wore suits till recently. It's more comfortable clothes now.

Have you and your partner ever worn matching outfits? Oh no! Never.

Are there any companies that you boycott? A few. I'd rather walk than drive/ride a German made car or a Ford. I don't buy gasoline from Exxon and I don't buy Nestle, Nabisco, Hershey and few other companies' products for the same reasons as joisygirl.

Walmart have made it to here. They're called Asda. Since their arrival into the market, there's just been one big price war betewen the big supermarkets - good for some shoppers but not good for farmers, growers and independent shops.

You're right, it's very difficult to shop ethically. I guess it's just about shopping more ethically!

I had a funeral suit but it seems to have disappeared. I'm trying to retrace my steps since my last funeral a year ago!

Nestle, because the chairman does not believe humans have a right to potable water.

Hershey, because they have moved production to Mexico and put a number of Pennsylvania dairy farmers out of business.

Nabisco, the national biscuit company, because they have moved production to Mexico.
If I boycotted companies who moved production abroad here, I'd soon starve!

I'm pleased I don't have to wear a suit for work, because I think if i did I wouldn't like wearing suits so much.

Like you, boycotting anything that's unethical would make it very hard for us to get by. I'd like to boycott Google but I'd lose out!

I guess the Volkswagen affair confirms your boycott of German-made cars. The company will be lucky to survive the fallout from its cheating. There's even talk of corporate manslaughter charges being levelled at Volkswagen!
