What Did You Just Say?

Before the widespread use of desktop computers and cell phones, one of my jobs was in mortgage collections. We had "to'" document customer conversations and payment agreements. With limited space and time, a lexicon of terms was necessary so that anyone reading the notes could quickly understand the summations. They included:

BK Bankruptcy

DNK Does Not Know

EOW End Of Week

LMTC Left Message To. Call

OOW Out Of Work

WCB Will Call Back

Now seems abbreviations and acronyms have crept into everyday language. You see them everywhere: emails, texts, tweets. To be honest, I am not a big fan of them. My “.” teases that my texts and tweets sound so formal and structured. What can I say? I like proper grammar and am a stickler for spelling. I worry if those skills are being diminished.

Here’s a quick tutorial with some of the newest and most commonly used short forms:

TFW That Feeling When

NBD No Big Deal

FOMO Fear of Missing Out

ICMYI In Case You Missed It

IIRC If I Recall Correctly

TLDR Too Long Did Not Read

GMTA Great Minds Think Alike

I know people will argue it is all about convenience and time-saving. love using them as a secret code they hope their parents will not understand.

I know the list i provided is brief. Are here any that you particularly like to use? Or are you like me, I prefer the old-fashioned way of writing full words and sentences?

I try to avoid abbreviations as much as possible. It generally leaves less room for interpretation.

Proper grammar and spelling exist for good reason. They help to express oneself unambiguously and thus save time in communication ...

I'm with you on the 'chat speak'. Ugh. I understand that it makes texting easier but c'mon ... is 'you' such a long word that it needs to be abbreviated?

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

Actually, on a site (not sight) such as this, being able to craft an articulate, clear message is a real boon. Many people cannot express themselves well in writing - let alone text (or txt -ought to be capitalised and nuances are lost in rapid exchanges, say on IM (on the rare times it works) or in chat rooms.

Many abbreviations have multiple interpretations, of course - then add to that the fact that this site tends not to transmit all the letters that one types, it is a wonder any communication happens!

One reason I don't like to text is I get along better with people who are literate.

I used to be in the TS (timeshare) business. We called it crime share.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I don't know too many and I only use the basic ones. But I guess it depends on where you're going to use them and with who. Makes little sense if the party you're texting with isn't up to speed.

Hi, pretty lady ... not much into the abbreviation thingy either - I only knew "GMTA". Ever heard of this one: "GGG", "good, giving, and game", and it means one should strive to be good in bed, giving "equal time and equal pleasure" to one's partner, and game "for anything – within reason". I prefer the use of actual words. Excellent post - thank you!

You are right, it's all about the receiver understanding the sender's message.
I know you are also an 'emoji guy'. Those look different on the desktop version of the site versus the mobile app. especially if you are using your cell phone to send them.

Hmmm....not sure what you mean about "points". This isn't a giveaway. If you meant getting site points for commenting, you won't accumulate much as there is a limit on what the site will credit.

Hi sexyldy1000

that's a good post

yes, we all use acronyms

but, it's all good

hmm be safe

MisterWives - "3 Small Words"

Your watch broke
And I hope that it stopped time
'Cause I really like your body next to mine
And I know
I'm goin', so can I dive
Back into waters that I barely survive?

Now I'm thousands of miles away
I wish I could tell you to your face
The things I gotta say
That night that you colored my hair
I knew something real special was there
But I was scared

Three small words are so big when they're for
You

'Emoji guy'? I have a label? lol OK.
I'm always on my phone on this site and they're auto-predicted on my keyboard - the emojis I mean. I've only been using those emojis for over 2 years now.
Hmmm... They look different do they? Well then, it took a while to find that out. Seems like a few other people here are not fond of them as well.
No worries... I'll stop using them. Thanks for the belated heads up.

Thought I was staying the obvious. It’s been discussed before and even tested. Where did I say I didn’t like them? Just like acronyms, they are effective, in moderation 😊.

I worked as an engineer for 36 years and with 4 years of college have 40 years of using abbreviations. CFS RCN PSF are just a few. As someone said, it works when others are already familiar with them. Or if you spell it out and put the abbreviation in parentheses so you can then abbreviate after that. I sent an email the other day. I used sister in law and then later used S-I-L, and was questioned about it. I forgot to put (S-I- after the words the first time. Had I used one of the three examples I gave you, the recipient would have known immediately as he is a retired coworker.

Context is everything.

Yes that's a fair point - the first time using an abbreviation, spell it out in full and it saves time when you want to use it again.
Agree - our lives are bombarded with abbreviations and we adapt or stick to the 'old way'. Thanks for stopping by.

The only one I knew was GMTL. I'm with you all the way. I don't like abbreviations either. When I get a test and someone uses U instead of spelling out the word drive me nuts. There's others too I just can't remember them right now. But I'm one who would rather talk on the phone that to text. I don't mind if when asking if you feel ok, got home okay etc. It's just more personal to me just like writing a thank you card or letter instead of sending a text.

I too would much rather talk than text. And you are right, a quick, "Did you make it home safely?" or similar is perfectly fine. A lot of it has to do with the lack of time people have or are willing to invest.
