Use your words

A seven year old girl was being harassed by a boy in school. So she hit him. That got the girl in trouble at school. But the adults did not ask what caused the hit.

The girl should have used her words to complain to her teacher. The failure to speak up and the vigilante justice by the seven year old made her the villain in the eyes of the school.

Gandhi and MLK, jr. learned the lesson of non-violent protest. A freedom fighter who is perceived as violent forfeits the moral high ground and is labeled a terrorist.

The same issue rocked the sixties. The Black Panthers were killed and imprisoned by the police. They did not get a national holiday either.

Protest clearly and complain. Sue, or home school. But do not hit or you become the bad guy.

In basketball the ref often calls the foul on the guy who is hitting back rather than the guy who hit first. Sadly the justice you take into your own hands can get punished more than the one who started the fight.

Self defense is great if you get credit for returning the pain proportionally.

Teachers and parents have argued for years over the best steps to deal with bullies. They debate talking, hitting back and shaming bullies. Learning self defense helps but if you go overboard then you become the bully.
