What IF YouR Tiniest DreamS... Became a RealitY... ๐Ÿ˜Š

I see her often โ€” she's my youngest . I hugged her a couple of weeks ago and asked her what was new. She smiled and said to me, "Pa, there's this show next Saturday, at the club," she works there part-time. "Mario, the drummer, asked me to join them for a few songs in their set. We practised โ€” it worked."

But then, she tripped me up. My eyes widened.

"Mario wanted to know if YOU felt like playing drums for a couple of songs. 'Creep' and another by the Chilli Peppers โ€” 'Under The Bridge'.

"Are you kidding?" I said yes โ€” in a split second.

It was past eleven, and that small club was packed and buzzing. The band got up on stage and powered through their set, then Mario introduced my ... and welcomed me up to the kit.

In my time, I've played for crowds of thousands, but to say I was a bit nervous โ€” in front of THAT low ceiling โ€” would have been an understatement. My has a powerful voice and has recorded with numerous groups. I wasn't worried about her โ€” I was hoping that I wouldn't fuck up.

BOTH songs kicked so much fricken ass. So pure, with crystal clarity and a perfect mix. Such a smooth beat for a drummer to trip off and a great vibe to get blown away on. But...

The thing was, I was backing up MY โ€” the spotlights were on her; I was smashing out the beat. A couple of hundred people cheered wildly, and her fans and friends screamed. I had a lump choking my throat and had a hard time focusing on anything but hitting my marks. The sound was heart-thumping through-the-soul epic, and my ears were fricken numb and ringing as I walked off the stage.

It was a buzz of a lifetime. DAMN, did it kick ass! Those two songs are legendary and I was so proud of her; but I'm thrilled that I didn't drop my sticks. I guess you had to be there. Life is short.

Drive fast, carry a double-kick in your 'overnight', and fuck the rest. ๐Ÿ˜Žโ—

..........

Do you prefer big venues or small clubs?

That sounds quite a night. You clearly are an accomplished drummer.
I once saw Status Quo at a festival and the drummer dropped a stick but he carried on brilliantly with one stick.

It was a bit more than that 'Poppa pride' thingy; it was an out-of-body experience. The band duplicated the CD โ€” to the tee โ€” which is tough on those two songs, and her vocals were off the charts.

True, thereโ€™s nothing more blissful than an outdoor concert on a nice summer evening. I managed to get to just one this last summer, but I enjoyed it.

Music venues are open in my area and most of them are requiring proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid test. Iโ€™ve still been feeling a little hesitant about being in a crowded indoor space, but Iโ€™m thinking about getting back on the volunteer schedule at the nonprofit venue I used to volunteer at.

She's very talented... in a lot of different ways. The genes she gets directly from me are probably more the stubborn and angry kind; it's her immediate reaction to not understanding something.

She had several opportunities to take her standup out on the road but declined as she likes to have a life I think.

In any case, it was more of a testament to the confidence Mario had in me than anything my daughter wanted. I would NEVER allow another drummer to play with my band unless I KNEW he could do the job.

Mario's band was the highlight group and spot-on with their renditions. They were pros, and they had no patience for any fuck-ups from random wanna-be drummer dads. He'd heard me play โ€” it was his call.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž

I think musician parents and their musician siblings โ€” transcend the typical stereotypical precepts of kids and the relationships they have with their mothers and fathers.
I read, all the time, about some 'old fogey' getting up on stage with his offspring. Music seems to create a bond that mends the stereotypes of broken bonds and builds bridges between generations. I believe it has a lot to do with how a creative mind is wired.

I imagine every mother and father search for some sort of 'invisible link', to their seedlings, no? ๐Ÿค” ๐Ÿ˜Šโ—โ—
