There are strange doings afoot in Blogtown. A smelly black goat has mated with an ass and given live birth to triplets- a one horned palomino pony, a sorrel jackass and a withered pale thing nobody can put a name to, but makes oddly whiny laughing sounds. There was jubilation that the pony might be the fabled unicorn but upon examination it was found to be a tired old nag with over two hundred thousand miles on the odometer. Upon examination the jackass began emitting a shrill, shrieking squeal and kicked everyone and everything within reach. As to the fate of the withered pale creature no one knows or cares. Even linguists are able make neither heads nor tails of what its whimperings signify. The goat was slaughtered and its guts cast by soothsayers, who predicted partly cloudy with a twenty per cent chance of sex next Thursday- if you're lucky. The unlucky get a government voucher for oral surgery with a chainsaw. Several members slipped in the goat entrails and that in turn was mistaken for an orgy, prompting several more members to dive in naked and begin fucking anything warm and slippery. The authorities were notified and they responded by masturbating into the pile of naked bloody flesh and then collapsed onto the pile themselves, adding to the chaos. No one seems to be able to get a handle on any of it but commentators and talking heads are blowing anything in sight that resembles an orangutan. It's every man for himself now, with mobs running wild in the streets looting and farting uncontrollably. The police look on, generally bored but rousing when the opportunity to shoot someone appears. Where it will all end I cannot predict.

Most bloggers here know that nicelipss66- Thalia- was the target of harassment and abuse by another blogger who was jealous of her popularity. That harassment didn’t peak with the infamous “Petition to Stop Transsexuals from Using Female Profiles’, but that was the reason for a number of bloggers to holler “Enough!” A number of bloggers were already talking about that systematic attempt to discredit nicelipss66 but for many others the petition crossed a line that was simply too much. The controversy appeared to culminate in both members being suspended briefly, but only the abuser was reinstated. There was indignation and outrage on account of this injustice. And also, for her abusers, smirking and self congratulation.

Only a few people know the hard work and tears it took for nicelipss66 to clear her name and be reinstated. They didn’t- and couldn’t- see the diligence and hard work it took for her to come back here. Plenty of us wondered if she’d even want to get back here, given her treatment previously. But she was determined to change the culture that had allowed her to be targeted that way. She refused to give in. I knew from the beginning that Thalia was honest and forthright. What I didn’t know was the strength of her resolve and the depth of her passion. She was not about to take this lying down.

Thalia not only succeeded in fighting her way back to this site, she got a commitment that gender bashing would no longer be allowed. She won a commitment that the Terms of Use would be enforced indiscriminately and fairly and that bullying of members would not be allowed. She won this for all of us, not just for herself. There have been some members who see this as a restriction of their freedom of speech. It’s clear that they want to retain the right to harass, bully and call people names with impunity. The absence of abuse is what they lament. They want to continue to use the anonymity of the internet to troll and harass other people. They also like to pretend that it’s impossible to be bullied or harassed. But cyber-bullying is a real crime. And it’s a crime that looks very different if you or someone you love is the victim. It’s easy enough for some to look away and say that it isn’t their problem. It may be a shame but they don’t want to get involved.

Thalia got involved.

I’ve heard it said that she’s ambitious. It’s certainly true that she has goals. Which one of us does not? But I’ve had a chance to listen to her about those goals and they certainly aren’t self serving or narrow in scope. What she fought for wasn’t only personal justice, but equal protection under the rules for every one of us. She wants honesty in competition for ranking and attention in the blogs. She wants an end to cheating by padding comment counts to rise higher in the list. I’ve also heard it said “Who cares? People will cheat, and the list isn’t important anyway.” We care because we care about cheating anywhere. And for all your disdain, ranking in the list is still important to some members. It’s certainly important to the site because they feature that list prominently on the main blogs page. I’ve heard it said that it’s human nature and you can’t stop it. Stealing is human nature and we have laws against that, don’t we? It doesn’t prevent every crime but it does protect us from a living free for all. What I’ve learned in my time is that when there are no rules, no one will play by any rules. Thalia won the opportunity for us all to play by the same rules, with no more favoritism.

This was hard. She was told she couldn’t win. She was told that the blogs have always been that way and she could never change it. Through her diligence, attention to detail and sheer hard work, change it she did. Many of us stood behind her and tried to help as best we could and that was due to Thalia’s integrity. I had no idea what would be the outcome of all this. In fact, I reckoned that we would probably not win anything at all, but lose big by being ignored. I was told too that we could not possibly change a thing. I was warned to be afraid. But Thalia made a believer of me and she has become the dearest of friends.

I can’t tell any of the details of what this woman went through to get us here. I have thought that maybe someday that story can be told. But for now at least, I wanted to acknowledge that it was not at all easy. It was an uphill battle all the way, and we’re all winners because she fought it, whether we recognize it or not. Freedom doesn’t mean simply freedom to do as we please. It also means freedom from certain things, like bullying, harassment and abuse.

Thank you Thalia, and Merry Christmas. I admire you, I respect you and I love you.

My friend, the blogger NaughtyInSO, is in the hospital. Another friend and Naughty’s neighbor, SilverPhenix has written a post- [post 3920722] to let us know where she’s been and how she’s doing. Naughty is quite sick and won’t be reading emails or speaking on the phone just now- but she will when she’s better and I’d love to see her mailbox stuffed for that day when she returns. Please visit SilverPhenix’ blog and read her post, [post 3920722]. Please leave a comment for NaughtyInSO.

NaughtyInSO is one of my oldest and dearest friends here. She’s been my confidant, my comrade in arms, my confessor, my ardent supporter and the very best of friends. I love her dearly. I know she’s equally valued and respected by many, many other bloggers here as well.

I’ve been absent for a while- not posting or reading and commenting on blogs. I miss it, too, and I miss my friends here. My mother’s health hasn’t been good. She’s eighty seven years old and her kidneys are failing, probably caused by a fairly rare autoimmune disorder that causes B cells in her body to attack and damage organs. She had an infusion with a drug commonly used to treat cancer patients but that drug itself often has some serious side effects. We can’t say that the infusion was either a success or a failure but the side effects- the cure- may be as bad as the disease.

Thanksgiving this year was a somber affair. My dad talked with me and was clearly putting his affairs in order without actually announcing it as such. He handed over all his passwords and financial data to my younger sister and I.

The following Saturday he called me in the morning and was at the end of his rope dealing with Mom’s illness. Pam and I talked about that and decided Mom probably should be back in hospital. She had just been discharged a week before from a week long stay. It turned out that due to her poor appetite and hydration that the levels of certain crucial elements in her body were dropping and she might not have survived the night without immediate treatment.

So- I’ve been spending most of my waking hours at the hospital and trying to arrange for long term care for her, partly for her and partly for my dad, who can’t be expected to manage all this by himself. By Wednesday we had found and hired a home health care service and some chore providers to visit daily at their home- a huge relief for all of us. On Thursday we toured an assisted living facility, trying to get an idea of what that might be like for them. The place is right around the corner from Pam and I…and that’s about the best that can be said for it. My folks want to stay at home and after seeing that sparkling new and antiseptic…sterile…place, I want them to stay at home too. There may have to be such a move some day, even soon, but we’ll all be glad to put it off as long as possible.

Mom is finished with the diagnostic phase and now the doctors are trying to treat and eliminate the symptoms that are the side effects of her infusion treatment. She began eating again yesterday and actually had some appetite. I called her this morning and she not only sounded better than she has in a month but had finished her breakfast- and liked it. She has a physical therapist who walks her and supervises her exercise, and she had done that too. So today I get a break. I’m headed there to stay with her as soon as I post this.

I know very well that given her age and her frail condition she may not be able to weather this. Our goal is that she spend whatever time is left to her as comfortably as we can make it. And we, the family, want to relieve my dad of the weight of responsibility he’s been carrying. It’s a waiting game, wait and see, make plans and amend or abandon them and there’s nothing we can do to change that.

I miss you all, and I miss talking to you in the blogs. I may get some time this week to catch up. You folks are always in my thoughts.

There is currently a malfunction in the United States of America. It seems we have inadvertently voted to have a misogynist, racist carnival barker and erstwhile con man as our president and de facto leader of the free world. Wait- strike that. The leader of the free world is now Angela Merkel- you know, the successor to the Third Reich who recoiled at the attempts at shoulder massages by the last man of the people who we decided we’d like to have a beer with, elected as our fucking president by the United States Supreme Court? Yeah, that’s the guy. Dubya. But Dubya wasn’t dumb enough to satisfy us so we doubled down on stupidity and elected Donald J. Trump. This is all about getting over on the guy next to you. Fuck him. Its all about me. So much for e pluribus unum, you dumb fuckers. Don’t worry about the poor of a bitch next to you. Let the bastard find his own fucking lifeboat.

In one vote, one election, Americans who have in such self congratulatory fashion bragged about being a melting pot that welcomes “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”, decided instead to embrace hatred, jealousy and rank fear to deny the humanity of our countrymen and fellow human beings. In this week, I hope against hope that my atheism is incorrect- that there is indeed a god and that she will consign every one of you to burn in a lake of fire for all eternity. Fuck you, fuck your progeny and fuck all your issue forever, you sorry and sad excuses for men. You are a congress of baboons, with my apologies to the goddamn baboons. So much for American exceptionalism. It just so happens that we are apparently only exceptional at fucking up a wet dream. There was indeed a noble experiment going on here. We nearly lost it in 1860 but fortunately our forbears were better men than we and saved our worthless souls for a generation or two. But, never fear, we’ve revealed our true character for what we really are- sad sorry miserable and selfish fuckwits who can’t see past the next plate of hot wings or the next pitcher of beer. You disgust me. I want to watch you grubbing for roots in the filth from which you came and to which you will surely return.

Americans were assured by the robot pundits who clutter what passes for news programs these days that the voters would reject Trump resoundingly, and they indeed voted to elect Hillary Clinton. So for the second time in sixteen years a candidate will assume the presidency after having been outvoted by a plurality of citizens. And now the same puppet pundits are instructing us all to accept this fascist loudmouth with open arms and give him a chance to succeed.

Don’t wait up for me. I won’t be going to that party.

What I will be doing is making noise. I’ll be standing up and shouting “Not my president!” and “Rise up! Fight back!” I’ll be standing in a crowd of all those who are marginalized and scapegoated by the neo-nazi thugs. I’ll be hollering my support for women, gays, lesbians, transgenders, blacks, hispanic, muslims, the disabled….that list is legion. It seems only white western european males are acceptable Americans now. There can be no excuses for condoning Trump and what he stands for. A vote for Trump was a vote for hatred and bigotry and bullying. And every voter who cast that ballot put his stamp of approval on a rebirth of fascism.

The rest of us may not win. We may not keep him from ramming his moronic policies up our asses. We may not stop him and that used car salesman Paul Ryan from dismantling the last vestiges of the New Deal, but we can say the truth, and we can take a page from their own playbook and obstruct every inch of the way. We can still stand up and be counted and we can form a circle around our targeted friends. We can pledge to take back first the house, then the executive and next the senate. The judicial branch is now lost to us for at least a generation thanks to the travesty of this election. But we can start. Rome wasn’t built in a day. The country is changing. Young people voted overwhelmingly for Clinton, and more importantly, they voted against hate.

But for the present, we fight back. There can be no making nice with racism. No peace with fascists!

These are the saddest of possible words:

"Tinker to Evers to Chance."

Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,

Tinker and Evers and Chance.

Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,

Making a Giant hit into a double—

Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:

"Tinker to Evers to Chance."

Franklin P. Adams, 12 July 1910

Holy cow! Cubs win! Cubs win! Cubs win!

The 24th Virtual Symposium- What we are thankful for

I have many things to be thankful for and the many friends I’ve made here stand out among those things. I hope I do an adequate job of showing how much I appreciate you. But I would have none of that without the one thing I’m most grateful for- my wife Pam.

She both literally and figuratively saved my life.

I had a botched surgery several years ago and the hospital staff threw me out of the hospital, afraid that I might die and anxious that I not do that in their hospital. In fact I was quite ill and did nearly die but because of my wife’s attention and because she rushed me to another, better hospital, I survived. This was a tough time for her. I was unconscious or heavily medicated with narcotics most of the time, so my recollection of events is murky. But I do recall that whenever I came to my senses, there she was. It put me in mind of what Gabriel Oak had promised Bathsheba in “Far From the Madding Crowd”: “And at home by the fire, whenever you look up there I shall be— and whenever I look up, there will be you.” Pam was loathe to leave my side. As I began to recover I insisted that she go home and sleep. It’s hard to rest in a recliner in a hospital room. A couple of times she did do as I asked, but only after I was out of danger. She nursed me there and put up with my opiate ramblings and inanity. I was sick and grumpy and she endured it all. When I was finally sent home she continued to pamper me and cater to me…and care for me. In a very real way, if not for her I might not be alive.

Pam figuratively saved me when I met her and she restored my hopes in life, and resurrected my belief in love. We were a couple of three time losers and were, I think, looking for some kind of friend with benefits. She said she wanted someone to go to the movies with and maybe have sex with her now and then. I was trying to find someone to talk to! I had had luck getting laid, but that only goes just so far. I was tired of splitting up the Ponderosa and tired of hookups. We met online in a now defunct but then well known dating site. I sent a message, mostly just out of curiosity, not really even expecting a response. So many never respond at all. I told her it sounded as if we had a lot in common. The next day I got a pert message: “Yeah? Like what?”

So…I told her like what and we began to correspond. It became fun very quickly. In a few days I was rushing home to talk to her again online. She told me I was the one guy who actually talked to her, and listened! It was easy to listen. With her second email she had at my request sent a short story she had written, The Loosestrife Man. It’s posted in this blog. I loved her writing and I began to love her. We met one sunny March Day in a park by the river in Niles, Michigan. Both our lives were changed that day.

For myself, I confess to having had some rescue fantasies. She was broke after her last divorce and stuck in a shabby second floor walkup. I could take her away from all that. She had a bad run of luck with men, and I KNEW I could do better by her. And I did, but the one who was rescued was me. No woman had ever made me smile like Pam. The joy I felt in her presence was like a drug, and we were like in love, in our fifties. She helped me to love again, and love life again.

I have heard people say that they will never be tied down by marriage or a monogamous relationship again, but with my wife I’m finally free to be me. She accepts me for what I am, and who I am. How many of you know wives who would tolerate their husbands having other women as best friends? How many wives would have the trust required to give their partner free rein to blog, flirt and raise hell on a dating site that highlights sex as its main draw? Pam and I are monogamous and sexually exclusive, by agreement. And she trusts me to honor that agreement. I have never enjoyed that kind of trust before, or that kind of maturity in a partner.

So if I’m thankful for my wonderful friends, and for my freedom, I have also to be most thankful for my wife, who made it possible for me. I have the best of both worlds, and the very best of partners. I love you, Pam.

What an inequitable thing it is for one man to have thousands, and another want bread, and that the pleasure of God is, that all men should have enough, and not that one man should abound in this worlds good, spending it upon his lusts, and another man of far better deserts, not be worth two pence, and that it is no such difficulty as men make it to be, to alter the course of the world in this thing, and that a few diligent and valiant spirits may turn the world upside down, if they observe their seasons, and shall with life and courage ingage accordingly.
